PHOTOS: Volunteers unite to build new playground in Tukwila Saturday

On Saturday, June 8, volunteers from Delta Air Lines, Impact Public Schools and the community transformed an empty site into a kid-designed, state-of-the-art playground in just six hours at Impact | Puget Sound Elementary School in Tukwila.

The new playground will help make play the easy choice for kids and families in Tukwila.

In April, students, faculty, and community members came together to design their dream playground. The playground is grounded in this community design process and will provide Impact’s growing school community with a great, safe place to play over its lifetime.

This playground is part of a broader effort led by Delta Air Lines and KaBOOM! to ensure communities have great PLAYces for kids and families. Delta has built 28 playgrounds in partnership with KaBOOM!, and this is the airline’s fifth playground build in Seattle. Through this partnership, Delta Air Lines and KaBOOM! are creating an oasis where kids feel valued and loved, and where their potential is supported, nurtured and celebrated.

Play is essential to physical, creative, cognitive, social and emotional development. Currently, Impact Public Schools is on a mission to prepare a diverse student population to succeed in college and impact communities as the next generation of equity-driven, innovative leaders. Impact currently serves 177 scholars in kindergarten and 1st grade, and will eventually grow to serve scholars in grades K-5 at the Impact | Puget Sound Elementary campus. The students are 81% students of color, 68% low-income, and speak 11 different languages. A key component to a thriving elementary school community is having a safe, joyful, and shared space for the scholars to play.
