Tukwila Pride Street Fair will be June 15

The first-ever Tukwila Pride Street Fair will be held June 15.

Tukwila Pride is the first-ever pride festival in the diverse and culture-fluid city of Tukwila.

“Bring your friends and family to this family event in the heart of Tukwila!”

Here’s more info from https://www.tukwilapride.org:

I AM ME
COMMUNITY, CULTURE, PRIDE, DIVERSITY

Tukwila Washington is one of the most diverse cities in the US. For a long time the committee of Tukwila Pride saw a desire to bring together diversity, culture, community and pride but wasn’t sure on how to approach just that. Now, for the first time, Tukwila will have its first Pride in the heart of Tukwila. Our goal is to bring together a very diverse city together where we can share life, all inclusivity and pride in our culture.

Pride street fair will take place in front of the Friendz Cafe building and the building adjacent to it. We are very excited to have venders, beer garden and a large stage. We thank all of the people who made this a possibility including PFLAG which has been saving lives, strengthening families, changing hearts, minds and laws since 1972. Their family and ally voice is integral to advancing equality throughout the nation.

On behalf of the Tukwila Pride Committee, I invite you to a celeration of community, culture, and pride as we honor prides past while establishing a brand new tradition of pride here in one of America’s most diverse cities. I am honored to help bring Tukwila this pride event because as someone who grew up in a rural town in SW Washington in the 70’s & 80’s, a time and place where being opening LGBTQ+ was a dangerous proposition. I know what social isolation, fear, and homophobia in society is; remedied only by education, visibility, and inclusion.

Pride events have been held in Seattle since 1974, but change has been slow to reach smaller communities. Advocates say that only now, after federal court victories legalizing same-sex marriage and affirming other LGBTQ+ civil rights, have lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people been able to live openly without fear of discrimination in many small towns. Almost 50 years after New York’s Stonewall riots kicked off the modern queer rights movement, American cities are still jumping on board the ever-expanding, ever-more-inclusive tent the world knows as PRIDE! With Tukwila being such a culturally diverse city, the time has come to bring all the corners together to forge a new future of unity and that is what we will do with Tukwila Pride. In contrast to large metropolitan pride events, Tukwila Pride will be local; local bands, drag performers, businesses, and people. There will be food trucks, Friendz Cafe, a beer garden, and vendors of all varieties.

I’ve been a queer activist for 25+ years and I’m also from a smaller, more rural community (in California).

This right here is what Pride means to me: “I am honored to help bring Tukwila this pride event because as someone who grew up in a rural town in SW Washington in the 70’s & 80’s, a time and place where being opening LGBTQ+ was a dangerous proposition. I know what social isolation, fear, and homophobia in society is; remedied only by education, visibility, and inclusion.”

I will contact you to see what assistance I can offer.
