Tukwila School Board fires Dr. Judith Berry as Superintendent

On Tuesday, Aug. 28, the Tukwila School District Board terminated the contract of Dr. Judith Berry, who had been serving as Interim Superintendent.

The duties of Superintendent will be taken over by Dr. JoAnne Fabien, Director of the Department of Teaching and Learning for the district.

Berry joined the district as deputy superintendent in 2015, and in 2017 accepted the position of interim superintendent.

The Board of Directors of the Tukwila School District is the guardian of the decisions that affect student achievement, budget priorities, and strategic focus. The Board members “believe that we represent a fresh perspective and a new direction for our School District.”

“This Board is choosing to move our school district forward with new leadership,” the district said in a statement. “Our actions this evening are intended to demonstrate the Board’s desire for the future for our School District that will be characterized by trust, transparency, responsibility, and progress. It is our sincere hope that we can regroup and take our first steps on a new path, together.”

The first day of school will be Sept. 5.
