New Tukwila Library will open this Saturday, April 29

A ribbon-cutting celebration and self-guided tour will mark the grand opening of the new 10,000 square foot Tukwila Library this Saturday, April 29, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Join KCLS, community leaders, library staff, Friends of the Library, the Tukwila Library Advisory Board and area residents to celebrate this landmark occasion.

Just a block away from Foster High School, the library address is 14380 Tukwila International Boulevard (map below).

The new library is designed to create a welcoming space, emblematic of Tukwila’s “gateway” status, while celebrating its diversity and supporting the needs of the community. A flexible space near the entrance of the library is open and welcoming, and supports a variety of uses, from lectures and performances, to tutoring and quiet study. This adaptable space is in part a symbolic celebration of the many people and cultures that make Tukwila an important place for a community-focused library.
Tukwila Mayor Allan Ekberg is enthusiastic about this new addition: “I’m excited for the opening of the new Tukwila Library. The King County Library System already offers excellent programming and access to information and is a great asset to our community and the new, larger location in Tukwila Village will be even better. Knowledge is a key to opportunity, and the library offers that opportunity to all of our residents regardless of age, ethnicity, or income.”

The building showcases natural elements of the Pacific Northwest, with expansive windows for natural light and outdoor views, natural wood in the interior, and charcoal terra cotta with glass-colored fins on the building. The south reading lounge view includes an exterior sculpture by a local artist John Fleming. The building includes unique sustainable features such as an open, cross-laminated timber roof structure and a “green” roof to insulate and control runoff.

The new library includes expanded access to technology for all, with more computer workstations and laptops for use in the library, as well as Wi-Fi and convenient power outlets for charging patrons’ laptops, pads, and smartphones.
Funding for the new library was made possible by public approval of the 2004 Capital Bond measure, with additional support from the KCLS Foundation.

In preparation for the Tukwila library opening, the Foster Library at 4060 South 144th Street will be closed April 23 at 5pm. No materials will be due from April 24-28. Patrons may arrange in advance to have holds sent to another location for pickup while the Foster library is being closed.
