On Monday, May 4th, the Washington State Department of Transportation will close the on-ramp to northbound I-405 from Tukwila Parkway for 14 consecutive days to widen and realign the ramp to match the future new lanes on I-405.
The ramp will reopen two weeks later, at 6am on Monday, May 18th.
This is all part of a major widening overhaul to the 406 and 167 freeways, and will include:
- The addition of one northbound and one southbound lane to I-405 between I-5 and SR 167
- One southbound lane on SR 167 between I-405 and SW 41st Street
- Extension of the southbound SR 167 HOV lane from I-405 to the start of the HOT lane.
WSDOT is doing this construction to relieve congestion in the area, since the I-405 / SR 167 interchange is one of the most congested in the state. This project is the stage 1 of a Widening Project that’s part of a broad master plan for I-405 improvements approved in 2002 by the cities and counties along the corridor, the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Authority, Sound Transit, King County Metro and WSDOT.
The master plan includes:
- Four new freeway lanes
- Bus rapid transit and other improved transit services
- Additional HOV direct access points, vanpools, carpool lanes
- More park-and-ride spaces.
It is hoped that this project will reduce the congestion and increase the capacity of I-405 between I-5 and SR 167.
The additional lanes on I-405 are targeted at increasing the 405′s general purpose roadway capacity by 50 percent.
More information on this construction project available at the WSDOT website.
