TUKWILA – This third shooting in a week occurred in Tukwila, this time at a gas station.

“It truly looks random,” Officer Mike Murphy said of the sudden violence. “We’re all scratching our heads. We don’t know why we’re having this spike right now.”

The most recent shooting happened about 2 a.m. Monday at the Shell gas station on Interurban Avenue South near Interstate 5, Tukwila police reported.

Witnesses told police that four men were arguing when one of them pulled a gun and fired three times. One man was shot, but is expected to survive his wounds.

Bystanders flagged down patrol officers, but the officers were unable to find the gunman, despite the efforts of a police dog to track.

It was the third shooting in Tukwila in less than a week. About 3:30 a.m. Saturday, a 27-year-old man was fatally shot in an apartment in the 5700 block of South 152nd Street. The gunman remains at large. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the name of the man who died.

On Wednesday, a 21-year-old man was shot in the leg and arm outside the Westfield mall at Southcenter. Two men have been arrested in that shooting but authorities were expected Monday to release them while Tukwila police detectives finish their investigation.

Prosecutors have three days to file charges against in-custody defendants and the investigation had not yet been completed, said Dan Donohoe, King County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman.

Tukwila police Officer Mike Murphy said the shootings are not connected, and those involved do not appear to know one another.

Detectives have found no motivations for the shooting, no issues of self-defense, nor any other reason for the gunfire other than arguments that became violent.

“There’s absolutely no reason why this should be happening,” Murphy said, adding that detectives are working around the clock to figure it out.
